My Dubai second home lost one of its Leader today. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum passes away. 30 years in Dubai taught me what security means – and he was one among behind it. Heartfelt condolences.

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE DEMISE OF SHEIKH AHMED BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM

It is with profound sorrow that we learn of the demise of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which occurred on the morning of Monday, 21st September 2026. He was 76.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid was the fourth and youngest son of the late founder of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and the younger brother of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

In view of this bereavement, the Government of Dubai has declared a ten-day period of official mourning effective from Monday, during which national flags will be flown at half-mast across all government establishments.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paid tribute to his late brother on social media, stating: “May God have mercy on Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. You are absent from our eyes but not from our prayers and hearts, O Ahmed.”

A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, United Kingdom, Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid commenced his career with the Central Military Command in Dubai and subsequently served as its Commander-in-Chief, transforming it into one of the leading military installations in the United Arab Emirates.

He later served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, a portfolio through which he made an invaluable contribution to establishing Dubai as one of the safest cities in the world.

Beyond his official capacity, he was a distinguished business leader as Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre (DREC), and Chairman of Al Wasl Football Club and the Dubai International Marine Club, the latter of which he founded and served as its first Chairman in 1988.

Having had the privilege of being employed in Dubai for nearly three decades and taking voluntary retirement in 2014, I have maintained a close association with the Emirate through annual visits. As a long-term resident, I have witnessed firsthand the security, stability, and progressive growth that Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid helped to foster.

An Irreparable Loss at a Critical Juncture

At a time when the Middle East region is confronted with considerable unrest and is in search of durable solutions for peace, the passing of a statesman of his experience and wisdom is an immense loss. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid consistently stood for stability, tolerance, and development. His absence will be deeply felt not only in Dubai but across the entire Gulf region.

May the Almighty Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah and bestow patience and solace upon the Al Maktoum family and the leadership of Dubai.

ദുബായ് ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ സഹോദരൻ ഷെയ്ഖ് അഹമ്മദ് ബിൻ റാഷിദ് അൽ മക്തൂം അന്തരിച്ചു

ഒരു പ്രവാസിയുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു അനുശോചന കുറിപ്പ്

ഇന്ന് 2026 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 21 തിങ്കളാഴ്ച രാവിലെ ദുബായ് ഞെട്ടിയുണർന്നത് ഒരു ദുഃഖവാർത്ത കേട്ടാണ്. ദുബായുടെ സ്ഥാപകൻ പരേതനായ ഷെയ്ഖ് റാഷിദ് ബിൻ സഈദ് അൽ മക്തൂമിന്റെ നാലാമത്തെയും ഇളയതുമായ മകനും, യുഎഇ വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയും ദുബായ് ഭരണാധികാരിയുമായ ഷെയ്ഖ് മുഹമ്മദ് ബിൻ റാഷിദ് അൽ മക്തൂമിന്റെ ഇളയ സഹോദരനുമായ ഷെയ്ഖ് അഹമ്മദ് ബിൻ റാഷിദ് അൽ മക്തൂം (76) അന്തരിച്ചു.

വിയോഗത്തെ തുടർന്ന് ദുബായ് എമിറേറ്റിൽ ഇന്ന് മുതൽ 10 ദിവസത്തെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ദുഃഖാചരണം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. സർക്കാർ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം പതാക പകുതി താഴ്ത്തിക്കെട്ടും.

“പ്രിയ സഹോദരാ അല്ലാഹു അങ്ങയോട് കരുണ കാണിക്കട്ടെ. നിങ്ങൾ ഞങ്ങളുടെ കണ്ണുകളിൽ നിന്ന് മറഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും ഞങ്ങളുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനകളിലും ഹൃദയങ്ങളിലും എന്നും ജീവിക്കും” – ഷെയ്ഖ് മുഹമ്മദിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിൽ ഒരു സഹോദരന്റെ മുഴുവൻ വേദനയുമുണ്ട്.

എന്റെ ദുബായ് ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞ  ഷെയ്ഖ് അഹമ്മദ്

ഏകദേശം 30 കൊല്ലത്തോളം ദുബായ് കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചു ജോലി ചെയ്യാൻ എനിക്ക് ഭാഗ്യമുണ്ടായി. 2014 ൽ വോളണ്ടറി റിട്ടയർമെന്റ് എടുത്തെങ്കിലും, വർഷത്തിൽ ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ തവണ ദുബായ് സന്ദർശിക്കുമ്പോഴെല്ലാം ആ പഴയ ദുബായുടെ സുരക്ഷിതത്വവും വളർച്ചയും ഞാൻ ഓർക്കാറുണ്ട്.

ആ സുരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിന് പിന്നിൽ ഷെയ്ഖ് അഹമ്മദ് എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 

ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ റോയൽ മിലിട്ടറി അക്കാദമി സാൻഡ്‌ഹെർസ്റ്റിൽ നിന്ന് പഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി, ദുബായ് സെൻട്രൽ മിലിട്ടറി കമാൻഡിന്റെ കമാൻഡർ ഇൻ ചീഫായി അതിനെ യുഎഇയിലെ തന്നെ മികച്ച സൈനിക താവളങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാക്കി മാറ്റിയ ധീരനായ സൈനികൻ. 

പിന്നീട് ദുബായ് പോലീസ് ആൻഡ് പബ്ലിക് സെക്യൂരിറ്റിയുടെ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ചെയർമാനായി ദുബായെ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സുരക്ഷിതമായ നഗരങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം വഹിച്ച പങ്ക് വളരെ വലുതാണ്.

ഒരു ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ സഹോദരൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ അധികാരത്തിന്റെ വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ നിന്ന് മാറി നിന്ന്, ബിസിനസ്സിലൂടെയും കായികരംഗത്തിലൂടെയും ദുബായെ വളർത്തിയ വ്യക്തിത്വമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. 

ദുബായ് റിയൽ എസ്റ്റേറ്റ് സെന്റർ (DREC), A.R.M. ഹോൾഡിംഗ് പോലുള്ള വൻകിട നിക്ഷേപ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ ചെയർമാൻ, നമ്മുടെ മലയാളികൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പ്രവാസികൾക്ക് ഹൃദയത്തോട് ചേർന്ന അൽ വാസൽ ഫുട്ബോൾ ക്ലബ്ബിന്റെ ചെയർമാൻ, ദുബായ് ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ മറൈൻ ക്ലബ്ബിന്റെ സ്ഥാപക ചെയർമാൻ…

മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ന് നേരിടുന്ന വലിയ അസ്വസ്ഥതകൾക്കും അനിശ്ചിതത്വങ്ങൾക്കും ഇടയിൽ, സമാധാനത്തിന്റെയും സഹിഷ്ണുതയുടെയും പ്രതീകമായിരുന്ന ഒരു തലമുറയിലെ അവസാന കണ്ണികളിൽ ഒരാളെയാണ് നമുക്ക് നഷ്ടമായത്.

യുദ്ധങ്ങളും ഭിന്നതകളും കൊണ്ട് മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ് പുകയുമ്പോൾ, ദുബായ് എന്നും ലോകത്തിന് മാതൃകയായിരുന്നു – സുരക്ഷയുടെ, സഹവർത്തിത്വത്തിന്റെ, വികസനത്തിന്റെ മാതൃക. ആ മാതൃക കെട്ടിപ്പടുത്തതിൽ ഷെയ്ഖ് റാഷിദിന്റെ മക്കളായ ഈ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ ദീർഘവീക്ഷണം വലിയ പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

സൈനികനായും, പോലീസ് മേധാവിയായും, ഒരു ബിസിനസ്സ് നേതാവായും അദ്ദേഹം എന്നും സ്ഥിരതയ്ക്കും (Stability) സമാധാനത്തിനും വേണ്ടി നിലകൊണ്ടു. ഇന്ന് മേഖലയിൽ സമാധാനത്തിന് വേണ്ടി പരിഹാരം തേടുന്ന ഈ നിർണായക ഘട്ടത്തിൽ, അനുഭവസമ്പത്തും വിവേകവുമുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തെപ്പോലുള്ള ഒരു നേതാവിന്റെ വേർപാട് എന്തുകൊണ്ടും ഒരു വലിയ നഷ്ടം തന്നെയാണ് – ദുബായിക്ക് മാത്രമല്ല, ഗൾഫ് മേഖലയ്ക്ക് മുഴുവനും.

അധികാരത്തിന്റെ അഹങ്കാരമില്ലാത്ത, എന്നാൽ കർമ്മം കൊണ്ട് ദുബായെ കെട്ടിപ്പടുത്ത ഒരു യഥാർത്ഥ നേതാവിനെയാണ് നമുക്ക് നഷ്ടമായത്.

ഞങ്ങൾ പ്രവാസികൾക്ക് ദുബായ് ഒരു രണ്ടാം നാടായിരുന്നു. ആ നാട് സുരക്ഷിതമായി നിലനിർത്തിയവരിൽ ഒരാളുടെ വിയോഗത്തിൽ, ഒരു മുൻ പ്രവാസിയെന്ന നിലയിൽ എന്റെ അഗാധമായ അനുശോചനം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

അല്ലാഹു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ ഉന്നത സ്ഥാനം നൽകട്ടെ. കുടുംബത്തിനും ദുബായ് ഭരണാധികാരിക്കും ക്ഷമയും സമാധാനവും നൽകട്ടെ.
