When some try to make Onam controversial, this is how I wish to see Onam.
Om Namo means Onam
Linguistically there may be no connection between the two, but isn’t there a beautiful spiritual connection?
Whose story is Onam? The story of Mahabali and Vamana.
Who is Vamana? The avatar of Maha Vishnu.
And who is the mantra “Om Namo Narayanaya” for? For that same Vishnu.
That means,
Onam is the day Vishnu came to earth and gave Moksha to Mahabali.
Om Namo is the mantra with which we praise that Vishnu every day.
Here lies the philosophy:
Om Namo – From below to above, man praising God.
Onam – From above to below, hearing that call, God descends to man.
One is the call of devotion, the other is the presence of God.
With a single chant of Om Namo, it reaches both Patala (the netherworld) and Devaloka (the heavens), and both of them return to earth to bless humanity – That is Onam.
The soul of both words is the same – Humility. Mahabali is remembered to this day because he showed humility by giving away everything he had. The meaning of “Namo” is also the same – to subdue one’s ego.
Even if there is no linguistic connection, isn’t Onam a reminder of the very attitude of “Om Namo”?
For believers, this is the story of Vishnu; for non-believers, this is the story of humility. Either way, Onam makes a human being a better person.

A – Abundant (Adhikam Aaghosham)
M – Merriment (Mahothsavam)
ഓണാഘോഷത്തെ ചിലർ വിവാദമാക്കുമ്പോൾ, ഞാൻ ഓണത്തെ ഇങ്ങനെ കാണാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.
ഓം നമോ എന്നാൽ ഓണം
ഭാഷാപരമായി രണ്ടും തമ്മിൽ ബന്ധമില്ലെങ്കിലും ആത്മീയമായി ഒരു മനോഹരമായ ബന്ധമില്ലേ?
ഓണം ആരുടെ കഥയാണ്? മഹാബലിയുടെയും വാമനന്റെയും.
വാമനൻ ആരാണ്? മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ അവതാരം.
“ഓം നമോ നാരായണായ” എന്ന മന്ത്രം ആർക്കുള്ളതാണ്? ആ വിഷ്ണുവിന് തന്നെ.
അതായത്, ഓണം എന്നത് വിഷ്ണു ഭൂമിയിൽ വന്ന് മഹാബലിക്ക് മോക്ഷം നൽകിയ ദിവസം.
ഓം നമോ എന്നത് ആ വിഷ്ണുവിനെ നമ്മൾ ദിവസവും സ്തുതിക്കുന്ന മന്ത്രം.
ഇവിടെയാണ് തത്വം:
ഓം നമോ – താഴെ നിന്ന് മുകളിലേക്ക് മനുഷ്യൻ ദൈവത്തെ സ്തുതിക്കുന്ന.
ഓണം – മുകളിൽ നിന്ന് താഴേക്ക് ആ വിളി കേട്ട് ദൈവം മനുഷ്യന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് അവതരിക്കുന്നു.
ഒന്ന് ഭക്തിയുടെ വിളി, മറ്റൊന്ന് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിദ്ദ്യം.
ഓം നമോ എന്ന ഒറ്റവിളിയിൽ പാതാളത്തിലും ദേവലോകത്തും എത്തി, വീണ്ടും രണ്ടുപേരും ഭൂമിയിൽ എത്തി മനുഷ്യരെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു അതാണ് ഓണം.
രണ്ട് വാക്കിന്റെയും ആത്മാവ് ഒന്നാണ് – വിനയം. തന്റെ എല്ലാം ദാനം ചെയ്ത് വിനയം കാണിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടാണ് മഹാബലി ഇന്നും ഓർമ്മിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. “നമോ” എന്നതിനും അർത്ഥം അതുതന്നെ അഹങ്കാരത്തെ നമിപ്പിക്കുന്നു എന്ന്.
ഭാഷാശാസ്ത്രപ്രകാരം ബന്ധമില്ലെങ്കിലും, ഓണം ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് “ഓം നമോ” എന്ന മനോഭാവം തന്നെയല്ലേ?
വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് ഇത് വിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ കഥയാണ്, വിശ്വസിക്കാത്തവർക്ക് ഇത് വിനയത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണ്. രണ്ടായാലും ഓണം മനുഷ്യനെ നല്ലവനാക്കുന്നു.”
